Hi there, after starting up my tropical tank 2 months ago I decided to add 2 female guppies and a male. My two females were pregnant when I bought them (surprise)!,and I noticed the other day that they were both very square looking, (one more than the other). I bought a small floating fry nesting box and got it ready but after 12 hours in there I thought that the female that I had placed in it looked a bit stressed so took her out. That night I went to bed and in the morning 1 baby was found floating at the top in the plants. (alive)! I couldn't see any more so put her in the box again, 12 hours later nothing so removed her, thus next morning another baby! (alive)!I took it that it was her who had given birth as the male guppy was chasing her around like nothing on earth and ignoring the other female. I am a little confused as now, 4 days later she is still really fat with a huge black gravid spot but no sign! Just dont want her to explode! I realise that there could have been more guppy babies and that perhaps they bacame sushi for my fighter fish, plec, etc but I don't understand why all the symptoms of a very heavily preggy guppy are still there??? Would appreciate all possible explanations, Paula p.s, the other guppy is still very pregnant!

welcome new mom! (lol) Welcome to AC!

Glad to have you here! I recommend you start a thread in the FW forums where more folks will see it and offer advice.

I will answer your question, stop putting her in a box to give birth, your stressing her out, if you can put her in a tank of her own she will let loose of the fry, or just leave her along. If the mail keeps harassing her he is either trying to eat the fry, or wanting to mate. you may have to remove him or add another female. your going to have lots of fry if there is enough coverage in your tank for them to survive.
I have females who release a small amount at a time, but I have them separate from the males as they have enough sperm to let loose fry 4 or 5 times after being with a male. I do not want all those babies so I keep my females separate.
my guppy always look pregnant, at times more then others with the square bellys. provide lots of cover in the way of floating plants or mosses etc. then you can assure you get some fry.
