Guppy tank

I have had my 35 gallon tank sitting around for 4 months and have finally arrived at a guppy tank. I wanted chiclids, but the chiclids I wanted got to be 12 inches long and would not work for me at all. Oh well, anyway. I had guppys before. 5 males and 5 females in a cycled 10 gallon tank with tetra 20 gallon filter on it. And within 10 days, they all died, still i have no idea why. So i want this attempt to go better then the last one. So I was wondering if there was anything different I should do to a guppy tank rather than my 55 community tank. Right now all i have is a tank and plan on getting an aqua clear 50 as I know i will overstock the tank eventually so I know i will need the extra filtration. I also thought about possibly breeding them as i know they are quite easy and was hoping for some tips and pointers for that as well. Last a very specific question. I hear about people keeping red or blue guppys, but can I keep both red and blue, and if i did, would that effect breeding? Any information would be great as you guys have helped me throught so much in the past, that everything is finally running very smoothly and I am ready to tackle a second larger tank.

Do a low light planted tank and have floater plants for the guppy frys to hide. This will be the only best way you to breed your guppies.

Could you give me a few specific floating plants. And what is a good ratio of males to females? I have heard 1 to 2 as well as 1 to 3.

If you want to breed to sell stick with one type. Buy from a good source, aquabid has some nice strains and possibly here down in the classified section too. 1 to 3 would be a good ratio.

in a 35 with just guppys ( add a few corydoras catfish, about 6 ) i would do 3 males 8 females. plant the heck out of the tank and just watch as the population explodes. and yes, i would start out with one strain and go on aqua bid, get a good strain. work from there.
