I have a guppy with what I would call fin rot. However, he also has red lumps - for lack of a better decription - where his tail is damaged. Not sure if this is just inflammation or what. The fish is eating well, active and aside from the tail seems in great condition.

The tank: 20g high, been running for about 3.5 months. Water parameters are good (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrates above 0 but less than 5.0ppm). 4 guppies, 3 cories, 3 otos and a honey gourami.

I've been treating with Melafix for a couple days - it hasn't gotten worse, but I'm not seeing much improvement either.

I asked my mom to pick up more melafix, as I only bought a small bottle. However, she instead came home with E.M. Erythromycin and aquarium salt.

So what is the best course of action? Melafix? Treat with E.M. Erythromycin and/or aquarium salt? I know cories and salt don't really go together and I worry that the E.M. Erythromycin will destroy my good bacteria.

It sounds to me like a bacterial infection has set in, so the Melafix won't help at this point. I'm not sure if Erythromycin hurts your BB, but since it's antibacterial, probably. If you have a spare tank or rubbermaid container, it may be best to move the guppy into that while being treated with the Erythromycin and to keep the temperate low, which retards the bacteria somewhat.

That's what I thought... going to clean up my spare 20 gallon, make sure it holds water and then go buy another filter tommorow, I guess!
