Hi there. I am trying to breed guppies in a 2 foot tank (13.8 imp gallons), without much success (surprisingly enough). i have 10 females and 5 males. the problem i think i am having is with water hardness. i tested the water with some "tetra test 5 in 1" stips. The results are as follows:
No3 - 5
No2 - 0
GH - <3*d
KH - 0 - 3*d
PH - 6.5
Ive beeing trying to research water hardness etc, and from what i can gather the guppies prefer harder ph levels than i currently have but i do not have a sufficiently big KH buffer to bother trying to change the PH. is this right?
anyway, i got a book on guppies which informed me that breeding can be affected by low water hardness and wondered how much truth there is in this.
i think i can raise the kh and gh by adding limestone to the tank or crushed corel to the filter canister but am unsure where to get either and even if i did get them, how much to use to raise my water hardness to sufficient levels without stressing or making the fish ill.
Any help on this subject would be really appreciated.
