so I got 4 guppys the other day since I have never had them and I finnaly found a few snakeskin males (loooove the snakeskins!) I got 3 males and the only female they had, who was already prego! they had been eating well and I had done multiple waterchanges. params fine and temp at 75. I woke up this morning and found two of the males dead, other is MIA and the female is fine. what happened? they showed no sign of sickness! so frustrating! their supposed to be tough buggers! on top of that the LFS's here dont normally carrry snakeskins! agghh!
by the way their in a 10g planted tank.

are there any other fish in the tank? Is tank cycled?

nope just the guppys. I guess this just happens but I wanted to know if it was a sickness or something that can be spread since I may like to move some of the plants to my betta tank.

I have heard some people say that the fancy guppies are not as hardy as they used to be... It is harder to figure out what happened since they died during the night, so you were unable to notice any symptoms...

all of the guppy's I pulled out had their mouths open like they had been gasping for air. when I turned off the lights they had all been at the top schooling. I'll try lowering the water level for more gas exchange.

Ive had the same thing happen to me before. but it was a pair of sowrdtails. I would try some aquarium salt. Sometimes that helps reduce stress and cure disease if there is any. Just don't put any fish in with them for two weeks or so. If you are intrseted i should have some new snakeskin fry soon. I could probably give u 10 or so when i get some more. Just pm me in a few weeks if u are intrested. I just sold about 300 guppies to some local pet stores.

Sorry to hear about your guppy's. I love snake skin also, trying to get my hands on some and just not having a lot of luck. Good luck with your tank. You already got some great advice so I have nothing to add.

thanks everyone, I'm going to wait and take care of the lone female and see what fry she has in her, raise them up and hopefully get some more snakeskins from guppy226!

4 guppies in a 10G planted shouldn't deplete the O2 that fast. I think your problem may be elsewhere. Guppies are natural top-feeders, mine are always on the top, regardless if there's enough air or not.

Guppies are not tough little buggers that they are made out to be. They're actually pretty fragile. There are many bacterial infections that they are suceptible to, and one of them is columnaris. You didn't notice anything on the fish when it died? Where's the MIA male?

It's possible that the female killed them all, if they pestered her enough, I've got some phsyco females that rams into the males from time to time.

I'm sorry for your loss, figure out what killed them, and you may be able to save the female, and have tons more. Aquarium salt at a concentration of 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons would treat most bacteria and keep other diseases at bay.
