The best way to tell is if they pair off for spawning. A clearish tube will extend near the anal fin. A female’s tube is bigger and blunt and a male’s is skinnier and pointy.
Like other cichlids, angels are picky. Not just anyone of the corresponding gender will do.
The tried-and-true method is to raise seven or eight of the same size and let them pair up as they mature.

It's famously difficult. How big is the fishes' body? As big as a silver dollar? Bigger?
Fish don't have a fixed sex, as birds and mammals do. They're like lizards and alligators: it gets fixed during their development. I wonder at what size juvenile angels actually become male or female... long before we can detect, that's for sure...

he's
about 3 inches vertically still young i suppose i got him a few mos ago at about the size of a quarter maybe a little bigger but lately his growth is taking off !!!
