I have a 75litre fresh water tank, I lost most of my fish to itch I have only got 3 tetras and 2 female fighting fish left. I have left my tank for 2 weeks and not added any new fish, done a water change and cleaned etc. The remaining fish seemed fine. Last week I brought 2 blue tetras and 2 gervace? tetras, I put them in the quarantine tank that I had set up, I didn't put a lid on the quarantine tank and the 2 little blue tetras jumped out, we found them on the floor in the morning,:duh:. Today the other 2 tetras seemed fine so I put them in the main tank, a few hours later one of them is not well, he is swimming straightup and down or just floating, very lethagic, I have transferred him back to the quarantine tank and medicated both tanks with melafix just to be safe, I have had a trouble free tank for 10 months and now feel as if it is all going wrong, how long should I have waited before adding new fish to my main tank, did I add them too soon after having problems with itch?

ICH can live for 2-3 weeks after the signs of it disappear, so I would of waited at least 3 weeks. Have you tested your water? is the QT tank cycled (I've had mant fish jump out of the tank, but never a tetra, makes me think the water was way off from ideal)?

The water is cloudy but well within the tests, I took some water from the main tank and added fresh as well, I had been running the filter for the quarantine tank in the main tank for over a week, maybe i just need to bide my time and not be so impatient, I don't want to lose anymore fish. Will fish jump out if the water is not right? I have always had a lid on my tanks, just never thought to put one on the quarantine tank, I am still learning every day, this is a really frustrating. Will having the wrong water temperature make the fish jump out? someone just told me that could be the reason the tetras left home.

I would certainly wait, hopefully someone will chime in tomorrow with better ideas on why this happened. My guess would be that as fish died from ICH the water parem. were thrown off and thats is what caused the downward spiral, What are your parameters in the main tank and QT?

Fish are like humans, the grass is always greener on the other side. Some fish, if the conditions are not ideal, will go looking for ideal water.

I fancy your whiskey diet maybe things would look better, will let you know tomorrow how my babies have survived.

My poor wee fish died, we have decided not to put anymore in for at least 4 weeks, who said fish in tanks were stress busters!
