Has anyone used this? I'm sure they have but... I need to know if it does a good job. I'm looking to get some nice filtration for a new setup... Any suggestions/advice?

I use it right now, but not the newest model. It's the regular Magnum HOT 250gph hang on back canister. It doesn't have a Bio-wheel or anything. Just to let you know, I've had no problems with mine, It's a hand me down from a saltwater tank (which usually tear up equipment quicker) and was a few years old when I got it about 9 months ago. It runs like a charm and I really like the size of the media container. I personally use it for Bio only except the mesh sleeve that wraps around the media. I have filled it with ceramic noodle things and have really enjoyed the filter myself! Good luck with it.

Just for info I use a normal HOB powerfilter for my mechanical filtration, and carbon (when needed).

The HOT is an excellent alternative to a much nicer (and more expensive) cannister. I would say it's great up to around 40-45 gallons or so. You would need a larger or additional filter for a 55 gallon, or a fairly light fish load in a 55. I personally don't think the HOT would cut it in a 55g; almost, but not quite. I've been using one for my 29g for almost a year (no biowheel), and I've been very pleased.

I use HOT Mags on many of my tanks as a mechanical filter. I prefilter with sponges and often pack the media container with floss. They are real workhorses and suck an incredible amount of junk out of the water. My HOT Mags are rated at 250 gph and they definitely pull more stuff out of the water than my Aquaclear 300, rated at 300 gph.

Marineland also has excellent support if you run into any problems. I really like my HOT Mags.

I don't think they are too good as a all-around filter, though, unless you get the optional biowheel. The HOT Mags are too small to add enough media to serve as a biofilter.

HTH,
Jim
