H.O.T filters ???????

Has anyone ever use one of those H.O.T magnum filters??
If so do they really work ??
I have a problem finding filters that fit the rim of my 46gal tank
Any suggestions???

Have you thought about trying a canister filter. That doesn't have to sit on the rim of your tank and they are much better and easier to maintain than other filters.

I don't have that type, but I have heard they clog easily. Most seem to use them to "polish" their water - making it extra clean.. It's also known as a diatom filter. I bought the Vortex XL since it seems to be a heavier duty diatom filter. As for you tank, is the edge sticking out too far for regular HOB filters? (HOB = hang on back)

Can you cut the edge a little..? Most won't see any "customization"...

Yes it does stick out much. I currenlty have the largest whisper filter there is but i would like to put a secong filter but I'm having a hard time find one the fits.

Look into a good canister...XP3 or Fluval 404 would serve you well. I made the switch from HOT to canisters last month and have never looked back!

I just bought the Magnum HOT to play with- I have a Vortex also but thought it worth a shot at polishing as the Vortex is such a PIA. I haven't had time to use the Magnum yet, but by my measurement it will fit rims up to just a tad over 1½".

I have a cannister but hang a hot magnum over the side every now and then and hook the gravel vac to the intake tube to pass all the stuff through the micron filter. Then just leave there overnight to "polish".

I have several HOT Magnums and I like them quite a bit. I mostly use them for mechanical filtration. I prefilter them with a sponge and pack them with floss. They are real workhorses, IMO, and I think they are more effecting mech filters than other HOT filters, even those that purport to filter a higher number of gallons per hour.

You can run the HOT Mag with the micron filter 24/7, but if you have messy fish (e.g., cichlids) they micron will clog too quickly. With less messy fish (e.g., tetras) you could probably run the micron continuously with non problems.

HOT Mags are really well made filters; I think they are sturdier than any other standard HOB filter (e.g., Emperors, Aquaclears).

I've got one running on my 33G and I love it. I've got the canister loaded with Fluval Biomax cores and it does a great job. If you are having trouble fitting the filter to the tank then do what other people have recommended and get a canister filter. A Fluval 304 would work great on that size tank.

I have one of the HOT Magnums as well. As suggested, only run it for a few days with the micron filter. It does a good job of polishing the water. I am not a big fan of the everyday charcoal / filter media option and prefer my Fluvals for that but as an occasional polishing filter it works well. The best thing to do is to purchase a second micron filter so one can be cleaning in the bleach solution while you are using the other one - depends on how often you use it and how many tanks you have. I have run it on both my 72 gallon and 125 gallon tanks with good success. Very easy to use and setup.
