Hi,

I'm new to shrimps so I have a couple of questions. I have some cardinal tetras in my tank now. Will they eat the shrimps? My understanding is that the adults would be ok but the babies will be eaten. Since cherry reds reproduce regularly, can my fishes also die from over eating?

I'd buy 20 cherries, but not sure how it will work out with the fish.

Depends on your tank set-up. I have red cherries in a tank with discus (3-4 in), cardinals and rummy nose tetras. My cherries are out and about eating and breeding without a care. Young babies however, are always hiding. You will almost never see a baby, unless lights are off and you will occasionally see a white dot jumping in the water. Those are the babies quickly moving around.

My tank is planted with all sorts of greens. Some leafy, some bushy and some thick cover of fine-leaved plants. Cherries love to hide in my Najas sp. Roraima bush. Looks like a christmas tree with lights :perv:

In any case, cardinals should NOT be able to decimate your population if you have plant cover, rocks, driftwood and/or caves of some sort. You will probably only see adults and large juvies out and about and on a rare occasion, a baby (very rare).
I would also suggest you start out with 30-40, to be on the safe side.

Good luck!

haha...not fish food. Thats what i'm trying to avoid from happening. I just dont want the shrimp to get eaten, then have my fish die from eating them. Double the casualties.

yadokari....thanks for the info. I think i'll start with 20. I do have some low maint plants (java moss, wisteria, anubias nana). I hope it works out.

H3D, I pm you for 20.
