Hagen Nutrafin CO2 System - no bubbles at all?

In honor of Revenge Of The Nerds...

We've Got BUBBLES!!!
:)

Sorry for the delayed response, got some lovely conjunctivitis from my son and was out most of the week. But when I did get into the office (Thursday) there were bubbles!! So looks like it takes longer than what the instructions describe.

And HOLY CRAP, the freakin' Yeast packets expired in 01/2003 (purchased 06/2007)

PetCo and Nutrafin will be getting a call about that, hopefully I can score some free packets that didn't expire before the Sox won the series.

Now I don't get bubbles often, maybe one every 2-3 minutes. As asked earlier, how often should we get bubbles?

I get about a bubble every 10-15 seconds after the system's been running for a few days, using just regular fleishman's yeast and some baking soda.

So PetSmart (I didn't mean to type PetCo earlier) checked the rest of their Hagen Nutrafin packets and the most recent one was from 3/2006. They had something like 9 expired boxes.

So I've started a new mix with that, and in the meantime they're going to get some non-expired packets and give me a box when they get those in. Hopefully this new mix will give me a bubble frequency close to what you get phanmc.

I wouldn't even use those packets if they gave it to me free. Never had a packet that worked as well as regular yeast, granted I only tried a total of 6 packets.

Replace the hagen package with 1/4 tsp of regular yeast and 1 tsp of baking soda. If you use wine yeast you drop the baking soda. Should see bubbles in less than half an hour. If you don't you have a leak or the yeast is bad.

Is this a good mix for a 6 gallon tank?

Mine always work great. I get bubbles coming out constantly for around 3+ weeks, then it gets slower till I have to replace. Maybe you just had old packs.

I usually get bubbles within 15 minutes and lasts around the same time. Since I refrigerate and use my yeast for other purposes, I know I'll never have to worry about using an old pack.

I heard using your own mix makes the house smell. Is that crazy talk???

Yes. It will, however, smell if your DIY CO2 coke bottle explodes from pressure and shoots and sprays all over the room.
