HAIR ALGAE

Simply put, if what you are seeing in your tank is a green, feathery looking mass, it is probably green hair or net algae. Once this type of algae gets a foothold in a saltwater aquarium, it can soon cover everything in your tank if prompt measures are not taken. The solution for getting rid of this type of algae is the same as the prevention: Starve it into oblivion.

Just an FYI citing a saltwater treatment in a freshwater thread really does not help the original poster of the thread.

Quick update before bed:

Have given the sand bed a good cleaning
cleaned out the fx-5
Dosed flourish excel for the first time ever following the recommended dose...( i think it was 25 cap-fulls for my 250 gallon tank on initial and then 1 cap-full for every 50 gallons every day/ every other day)

**Trimmed all of the hairy algae that i could find out of the tank including the removal of a couple of plants all together.
I also put in six little ottos just the other day, and a whiptail cat. Hopefully they will help with some of the algae clean up
