The leaves of my hairgass is rotting one by one floating throughout the tank- disturbed by a few sword tails. This morning i pulled it out, there is no root at all. What is wrong with it? Is it because of the substrate which is purely river gravel?

I find HC grows better in sand substrate but can be grown in gravel. It needs plenty of light to get established. Once it starts to carpet the ground I find it needs less light but definately needs it to start out. Ferts and Co2 are a big asset when trying to grow HC.

HC? The OP is talking about hairgrass...maybe you read too fast.:)

To the OP, I agree with Squakbert, we need more info to help you out. Perhaps you don't have the correct tank conditions to house this plant. :)

There is little wrong plantwise with your tank. Swordtails think dwarf hairgrass is candy and they will eat it like crazy. I learned this the hard way.

Hairgrass does need a finer substrate to take root in. If your river gravel is not a small size, this will complicate things.

Thanks for all your helps.
- I got a 60g tank with river gravel substrate (mixed 3mm -5mm).
- DIY CO2 yeast method.
- Lighting - 2 fluorescent tube bulbs 18 watts + 61watts (as mentioned by some AC members, 61w is an odd number but that is on the bulb itself which read 61 imp/watts
- Fert - Dry KNO3 / Scultz all purpose plant food.

I am trying to protect another bunch which looks healthier than the one that has just perished.

I meant hairgrass and mistakenly HC for short. I should know better. Just look at my tanks in my links and you can see that I have no problem growing hairgrass.
Your lighting may still be on the low side (should be 5,000-10,000 K) for this plant and I don't know about the Scultz all purpose plant food. If this fert is not meant for aquatic plants I would not use it. It may introduce many things into the aquarium that are not good and may cause massive algae outbreaks.
