I want red sand! But I also want to use Flourite....so do you think it would be worthwhile to hammer it down into sand or would I just end up with an unusable mess?

why not just use the flourite where your plants will be and along the tank and then place the red sand in the foreground and inbetween all the plantwork. That way the plants roots can still lock into the flourite and grow while you accomplish the red look your wanting as well..... just a thought, Im still new to the whole planting thing.

Finding red sand is difficult for me. I've looked everywhere and all I have uncovered is Repti Sand (which is too fine) and 3M Colorquartz (which is too much of an unnatural red whereas I'm looking for something more rusty in color.) Not to mention the whole tank will be planted.

ooohhhh I see, umm..... why not take lava rock and crush it somehow if possible. then layer the top part with it?! Will that work?!

Any sand you put on top of larger pieces will make its way down to the bottom.

Interesting you thought of this, however I think if you smash it with a hammer you are gonna end up with too much dust. Unless you got screens to separate the sizes.....

I would guess hard to use mess.
isn't flourite clay?

Cool idea, but like others have said, your sand particle sizes would be all different and not to mention the ton of dust. Check out msjinkzd's recommendation....I think shes right.
