On page 124 of Aquarium Style Matthew Christian lays out a themed tank called "plastic playground." The centerpeice of this tank is a curved x made out of open-ended hamster tubing. The idea is that fish will enjoy swimming through the tubing. The tank also features plastic rings and a plastic bird ladder. Christian suggests mollies or platy for the tank.

Is that a crazy idea? Would fish really swim through plastic hamster tubing? Would the tubing mess with the water circulation? I promise not to actually build this, by the way.

I think it's gonna p!ss off your hamsters big time, lol.

On a more serious note...I think any structure is something fish appreciate. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually explored their way through the tubes. My intial reaction is cleaning the inside of those tubes might be a little difficult depending on how mobile they are.

Some fish are very intelligent, some are very curious and seem to love exploring their environment. It's easy to imagine that they can become bored, they might like to play in and around tubing, who knows? At the very least it would make for an interesting looking display :)

When i used to have some mollies in with my ropefish, i had to be creative to feed my ropefish and i tried to place the food in a empty coke bottle and sink it. I thought only the rope fish would be slender enough to fit inside it but i was wrong, my mollies kept swimming into it to explore it. Not like this is any kind of hamster tubing but i would expect its the same principle to an extent. And my opinion would be they would swim through them. Look at people who have created water bridges to link 2 aquariums together.

I have the same book. I like the bamboo idea in there. I know some petsmarts put hampster tubing in their tanks but to me it seems it would be really hard to clean.

Most hamster tubes are made on 2 pieces on plastic, 2 half circles. that comes apart long ways making 2 exact same piece that lock together. you can just take them apart and clean them like that.

not that i have ever owned one, BUT from what i have read and talked to people about. Black Ghost Knife and toher Sonar fish would like the hamster tube because they "see" a solid cave, BUT you can still see them. Excellent
