I'm such a huge fish geek that naturally I like talking about my tanks and all that good stuff but of course there are certain friends who will expressive extreme disinterest and roll their eyes almost rudely after a while. Yeah...I know I should care what others think and just be happy with what I'm doing blah blah but still it's kind of a downer and makes me question myself a bit. It makes me feel boring to anyone else but fellow fish geeks and makes me wonder why I am so very interested in something that on the whole isn't very "cool."

Your thoughts?

My thoughts on the matter are this:
Fish are extremely cool, not just because they are beautiful, but also just the awesome skills they possess. Most people don't find fish appealing because you can't pet them or "play" with them IMO. However, if you can explain why fish are so awesome, in terms they can understand and enjoy sometimes you can win people over. I find that explaining lateral lines to people can peak certain interests if done right.

Can't please everyone! To thine own self be true.
My 12 year old boy asked me not too long ago "how do you know if you're cool?" Simple answer I gave him....When you don't care if others think you're cool, you're cool.

I like that.

If your friends aren't interested, they aren't interested. Nothing you can really do beside bore them to death, or find something else to talk about. Surely you have other interest.

ive only got one fish, but i am a huge fan of reptiles. ive had friends roll their eyes when i start talking about them. and they act like im wierd when i say im not staying out late cause im driving to tinley park to go to a reptile show!!!! haha. its all cool though. i think if we had friends that had the same interest and nothing else it would get kind of boring. so i have friends that are into reptiles. i have friends that are into fish, and i have friends that want to hang out, go to bars, go to movies, or into sports. some of the non interested ones after a while will call you up and be hey i saw this or that. its cool when you can teach them something they didnt know, just dont throw it in their faces. so my thoughts, add some more friends to your group!!!!

Just a thought

Maybe make some more geek fish friends?

I give short responses to their questions, some what leading, and don't initiate the talk. I putz around the tanks when visitors are over, and it usually incites conversation. When the subject turns, I just let it go in the new direction.
