I've just had my first experience with green dot algae and it had to happen in my acrylic tank. Scrubbing it off is out of the question so does anyone know of an acrylic safe way to remove them? Does a blackout period help remove what is already present?

Why don't you try acrylic scrubbers? They work pretty well.

Blackouts are effective, but not a final solution.

I haven't tried that type but I have tried using other acrylic safe scraper blades with no luck, and they hardly remove anything and usually end up leaving a mark on the acrylic.

Eh, blades are a waste on time on acrylic. Try the white scrubby pads. IME, they work quite well. Requires a little more elbow grease, but it's worth it.
