I'm planning to setup a new aquarium, and researching different fish that I might be interested in. My tap water is from a well drilled into a limestone aquifer. I tested it with these results;

pH 7.5
Alkalinity 240 ppm
Total Hardness 425 ppm

The hardness and alkalinity were the maximum the test would indicate, the water is essentially at saturation levels of calcium carbonate. That pretty much rules out an amazon tank. I'm thinking of going with african rift lake cichlids, but would like to hear about any other fish that can tolerate crunchy water.

hows the water at the fish store? at our big one they have everything except the extreme sensitives acclimated to normal city waters and they have all sorts of fish. rams, angels, plecos to all sorts of barbs, tetras, danios, goldfish. the only ones with differnt water is the salts and some of the africans. you could also get a RO unit and some driftwood/peat and stuff.

You actually have quite a few options.

Central American Cichlids
C.A. Live bearers
Danios
Red Tailed shark or rainbow shark (only one and not both)
Most barb species
Most Labyrinth fish-gourami, paradise fish

Also, most tropical fish should be able to adapt to your conditions anyway, with the exception of a few touchy species like discus and chocolate gourami, I might even throw blue rams in there.

However, I do think that Rift lake cichlids are you best bet.
