Hard Water Woes- Which fish work best?

RO or "distilled water" is OK if you're mixing it with your tap water, especially if it's very hard to begin with, because then it should have plenty of solutes. Actually, this is the preferred method for reducing hardness and pH.

I'm just curious, with such a big tank, do you boil the water or buy distilled water for your water changes?

you can buy Reverse Osmosis units that hook up to your sink or faucet. It removes solutes, minerals, and impurities. You have to replace the filter regularly, though, or else it fills up and stops producing "distilled" water. For people who are serious about their aquaria, or have sensitive soft water fishes like discus, this is the way to go. In the long run, it's MUCH cheaper than buying the water (which is 35 cents a gallon where I live).

Distillation is a process where, by boiling water, the condensed vapor is pure water, minus the solutes and crap. With both RO and distillation, you end up with some water leftover that is extra-concentrated, as a by-product.
