Harder, Cardinal or neons?

Whats Hardier?

I don't mean to hijack this thread, I just have a question, as I am curious about something.

After reading this thread, and a few other threads on other fish forums (as the neon/cardinal question pops up alot), I was wondering why and how cardinal tetras seem to be hardier than neon tetras?

Because cardinal are almost always wild caught (because they are harder to breed), and yet neon tetras are mostly tank raised.

So in theory, wouldn't neons be hardier than cardinals?

But now I am confused, because I am hearing a unanamous (spelling?) "vote" if you will, about cardinals being hardier

I have only had the neon tetras (with "ok" results), but I have never had cardinals, so I am interested to hear other people's experiences :)

Many of the tank-raised neons are bred overseas in overcrowded, lousy conditions. The fish are disease-riddled or genetically inferior. There have been some successful domestic (to the US) efforts at farm-raising neons, and these seem to produce hardy fish.

All great points that JSchmidt made...

blueturq - Here at AC (and many other forums), when people compare two similar fish and say one tends to be hardier than the other, this is usually just based on experience... with some facts to back it up. But in my post anyway, I was going on my past experiences with neon’s. :)

oh, i'm not trying to argue with anyone's points (it'd be hard to agrue with somebody's experiences :p)

I like hearing other people's experiences, rather than general info, because it gives me precautionaries or even good feelings about a certain fish(s)

And I thank you and JSchmidt for clarifying my confusion :)

Ok, i will have to make this into a poll, so far im going with Cardinal's, but a few say neons :S

yep just have to consider the source on the neons. if they came from good conditions then they tend to be less demanding than cardinals. however cardinals as a species are more demanding which is why they are all imported from the wild rather than farm bred.

so the variable is the source of the neons not actuall hardiness of the fish in question.

No expert here! But I've only had neons, my LFS never even has cardinals, I have no idea where they came from, but I have been really lucky. I have great luck with them and honestly don't do water changes as often as I should, my ph, nitrites etc are always good, but I haven't lost one yet! I think if you take care of your tank you can't go wrong with either :)
