yeah as for sexing them well I can only tell you the most comman thing in new world cichlids... usually males are larger, and have longer more pointed fins.. and thats it. but good luck.
Tell my dorsigera that! The one that I'm pretty sure is male is by the largest with the more pointy dorsal and caudal fins...the female the smallest, the two inbetween just are not cooperating!
I've posted pics over at appistogramma.com, but they just told me wait and see - behavior was the best indicator in these guys.
Mine was a pair of Paratilapia bleekeri. They were very aggressive, especially to each other. The only way I could keep them together long enough to pair off was to keep a school of giant danios in there with them, and they would pick one off every day or so. I only managed to breed them once, and the female promptly ate the eggs, so the male promptly ate her.
My jellybean parrots just bred a while ago. I heard they do that very rarely. Don't ask me what I did, I wasn't even at home for weeks. So all credit goes to the male. Plus I'm the worst aquarists, I'm never at home, rarely change the water. I know nothing about fish in general, until today I didn't even know these guys are chiclids. But the tank seems to maintain itself somehow, water is clear, parameters are normal. It must be divine intervention.
