how about the extra compartments that you can put your own media in...are they decent and able to hold pretty much whatever I want? Are they very effective?

Yes, they are nice. I like sponges. Sponges give you decent mechanical filtration and large surface area for bacteria to thrive in. Some folks use creamic noodles etc, but they cost more. I'm just a cheap guy.
