ever returned fish to a local fish store?

i have a Mono in my fresh water tank for about 2 months, i heard when they get big they to be in salt water, i also have 2 clown loaches that are getting too big...

anyone know if they would take them? i'm not looking for all my money back, maybe just to trade them for an Angel fish and a coupla Neons...

It depends on the store. I've seen some where signs are posted asking for people to bring their fish in but others that will refuse to take any fish. You may want to call ahead and talk to a manager about your mono & loaches. Some stores will be willing to give you a more fair deal than others.

I've had some friends return fish. All they had to do was call ahead and speak with a manager. They almost awalys took the fish but the fish credit was usually only a fraction of what the fish cost.

My LFS chains have told me they often take big fish like plecos in for trade. The big fish are generally easy to sell they say as people with big tanks don't want to buy tiny plecos. However, they will genrally only take smaller fish for free and give you nothing.

I haven't done it, but I know lots of people who have. And, if the store you got it at refuses, call others. There will be at least one store out there that would take them in. Larger fish for them means they can charge more money to resell them.

People do this all the time with plecos, keeping them until they get big and trading them in for smaller ones.

If no store will let you return them (which I don't foresee), they usually have a bulletin board. Make an eye catching poster and give your name and number. I bet someone would rather buy/recieve a healthy fish from you than one that is in a LFS tank.
