A fish using only one gill to breath with?

I had a little freak out last night because I hadn't seen my SA Red Tail move in a while and when I was checking him out, he was only breathing with one gill. This inspired the thought that my beloved cat was slowly fading off into the next life.

I grabbed the net, and got him scooped and pressed against the front glass for a closer look(not the easiest at 14".) Took him a while to come to, but within a few long seconds, he was fighting and thrashing as hard as could be expected. I let him go, and he found a new resting spot on the far end of the tank. I frantically checked water quality, and it was the best it's been since I removed the rotting driftwood. Turns out I had just woken him from a deep slumber.

Anyone else seen that? A fish breathing with only one gill.
