A friend of mine used to keep those along with I think they were called Alien Head mantis among others. He kept them well fed with a steady supply of bugs and a cross-ventilated enclosure.
It is illegal to own, breed, sale, possess an Orchid Manits (Ghost Mantis, Violin Manits, Flower Mantis, other non native invasives) in the United States! If you are in doubt contact USDA/APHIS which is a Federal Government Agency, the head of which can be contacted via the site and he will personally inform you that all mantids EXCEPT U.S. Native mantids, Chinese and European (M religiosa) are illegal in the United States! The tropical and other non native invasives carry pathogens to which our U.S. Native Trees are not immune! So who ever is telling you that Orchid Mantids are not illegal in the U.S. is most likely selling them! There are 20 U.S. Native speices and 2 introduced mantids allowed in the United States according to APHIS a U.S. Federal Agency
To be honest, I don't remember if they flew or not. If they could, I would imagine they would not be super proficient. Kinda like cockroaches or something.
If I remember right, some of them were kept in exoterra type cages with plexiglass around most of the mesh or large glass cages with screen tops partially covered
i dont have an orchid mantis, but im currently keeping a creobroter gemmatus. its pretty easy to keep one, they dont need a lot of space, room temp is fine, and u can just feed crickets. simple, yet fascinating pets!
