We're now not sure if we want dwarf gouramis in our 25g.
Is there another species of gourami that would be peaceful enough to cohabitate with 11 neon tetras? and be comfortable in a 25g. Or are there any other suggestions for nice centerpiece fish?

What's he doing that's wrong?

How long has he been there? Personalities vary a lot with those fish, but numbers are important to minimize agression, and let them get comfortable and establish a pecking order.

Supposedly Pearl Gourami's are more peaceful and generally healthier than Dwarf's.

Good luck
chris

Well gouramis are probably my favorite group of fish, so I'm biased here, but a dwarf gourami would make a great addition to your tank. A male without females might chase the neons around, but IME is unlikely to do any damage. Check closely in the dealer tank when you buy dwarves though, if ANY of them look sickly, aren't moving or have an open sore, dont buy a Gourami from that store.

A safer bet with your neons is a "Honey" gourami (Colisa Sorta, or Colisa Chuna) Honey gouramis are a bit smaller and gentler than the dwarfs, but they can be harder to find. These are less likely to be ill at the store, but a little less hardy than C. Lalia once established IME - still fairly easy to keep though.

Pearl Gourami (Trichogaster leeri) would be nice too, they get a bit larger than the dwarf variety, but they are really shy usually. Only thing is, if you get one that's not shy, it could wreak havoc on your neons... but any Gourami *might* pick on them I suppose.

Gouramis, like cichlids, display a wide range of personality (fishinality??) even between individuals of the same species, so YMMV from fish to fish, but generally they're great aquarium fish.

Oh ya, there are a few varieties of Dwarf Gouramis, and the gold and sometimes the red (is red with a blue dorsal fin) varieties are thought to be a hybrid of the Dwarf and Honey. These "Dwarves" are thought to be less prone to the common Dwarf illnesses. So if you do decide to go with Dwarfs, try the red one for the safest experiance. I have a red one, and he's safe with all but the smallest killifish fry (he was in there to eat hydra 3 years ago - which he was a champ at BTW, but I just left him in the 2nd stage growout tank, that's how safe he is) very gentle fish, but not shy.

There are also some Gouramis, usually smaller 1.5-2.5 inches which aren't commonly seen, but would be good with neons. A couple of good bets there would be the Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumilus) and the Licorice Gourami. These are very small, and are a little harder to keep, but with some research you would probably be okay. Liveaquaria.com used to have some "oddball" Gouramis, you could check there.

I will add to Ryoken's list the chocolate gourami. They are beautiful and stay small (2"). You could keep several in your tank. I am told they are not as hardy as other gouramis, in other words they are not as tolerant of poor water quality. I have never had a problem. Just be sure to do your regular water changes.

I posted before we got the 2 dwarf gouramis this weekend... was worried that they would be as inactive as they seemed in the LFSs (most that I've seen just seemed to sit there motionless). But after introducing them to our tank I LOVE THEM! they are swimming all over the place investigating everything and everyone (even going through the little hole in the mopani wood that the neons rarely swim through). They aren't at all bothering the neons but they do love tormenting our weather loach but I think it's more a curiousity than anything aggressive. They do seem pretty pompous but even the "algae eating shrimp" (guessing they are amanos) are standing up to them face to face and telling them to p!ss off :) I just hope the gouramis don't get too comfortable and eat them... but since they spit out flake food multiple times before swallowing, I doubt they're capable. Which brings me to a question... the dwarf gouramis seem to be rather picky eaters. They've only been in the tank for 2 days so I'm attributing that to aclimatization but what do you feed your dwarf gouramis? Oh and my girlfriend wants to get a honey gourami to accompany them which I think would be a great compliment to the 2 powder blue dwarfs... would that be fine? any suggestions for an alternative to a honey? The pearl gourami sounds appealing but how many times out of ten will you get a 'neon eater' or a general pain in the @ss? Not neccesarily looking for another gourami so any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I am bitter towards gourami since there has been many instances where I have lost fish because of them. The only three gourami that I would ever recomend to people is a pearl, moonlight, honey out of those three the honey has still IME been a little jerk

I'm so sad about mine. One day he was fine, the next he was dead :( . My cats loved watching him the most as he really caught their attention. Very beautiful, red with blue fin.
