Aloha Everyone!

I was in the stream catching wild guppies and I was wondering if I should start a tank with species native to hawaii...(well maybe some non-native things for looks!) We used to have them as feeder fish for our tilapia and oscar, but... that was a long time ago.

Anyone think that it would be possible?

If you want, take a look at that link. The main fish in my tank would probably be the aholehole (Hawaiian flagfish) and the o'opu naniha (Stenogobius hawaiiensis)... also some hawaiian prawns for the bottoms.

Well, here's a new project for me... wish me luck!

Aloha,

PS: Anyone wanna get updates on this project? hehe.

Well, Thom, you'd at least be mosquito-free in that area...I don't know about heaven because I'm a little down on the availability of exotics...catch all the guppies that you can, Nic, cause they don't belong there!!!

Aloha to you to,

There isnt to many people out there that are doing native Hawaiian stream fish biotanks. As you know there is very few species left that are true Hawaiian. One thing you may have to check on though is the legality of collecting some of these fish. Some of them are protected under Hawaii state law. There is an amazing number of cichlids in the waters throughout the Islands as well as fresh water gobies (O'opu) which are few in numbers. Beatiful fish. There are restrictions on O'opu and Hinana so it would be wise to check with the DLNR or the Uof H in conection with this species. There is however some neat Opae out there but some of them are a little agressive towards fish.

There are studies being done on the O'opu at the Uof H in areas of breeding with limited success. If you are interested in trying this, it may be posible to aquire permits on these fish.

Good luck

Mahalo!

I have been looking online for info about the legality issues. Mahalo though, for your tips. I was thinking that all the fish in the tank would not have to be native. I was thinking some aholehole (Flagtail) and some o'opu naniha and some opae and stuff. Pretty much anything we can catch in the streams! haha!

A hui hou!
