Has anyone ever heard this before? Every now and then i hear a sharp thunking sound and i think ive narrowed it down to the heater. the water temp started to drop but the heater is still pretty hot. i cranked it all the way up and added a second smaller heater for backup. Im just curious as to an explanation.

Hmm, that's odd. Is the heater suctioned to the glass or is it free? If it's free, then I'd be concerned that it's knocking into the glass.

How often do you hear the clunking? If it's pretty often, I'd try taking out the heater for a short time and see if it stops. If it does stop, I would replace that heater ASAP or the suction cups if the current ones aren't holding. Replacement cups should be available at your LFS for pretty cheap (like $2-5, depending on the brand and your LFS's pricing).

One of the heaters in my 55G does this, it almost sounds like glass cracking, for weeks it drove me crazy, I kept looking all over my tank worried that I was leaking somewhere. I eventually noticed I only heard the noise in the evening, then I only heard it when the light on the heater was on, one day I heard the clunking noise, unplugged the heater and it stopped, plugged the heater in again and it does it.

I am not sure of the cause, and eventually I will replace the heater, but its still working, just makes an odd noise. I think there was another thread on here a while ago about someone else with the same problem.

hmmm thanks for the thoughts, it does not seem to be a physical thing like knocking against glass, or like glass cracking, but i will take another look

if your heater is acting up, replace it. 90% of the time a bad heater will stick "on" and the temp will clime too high, killing your fish. Seen it happen a dozen times.

As for the clunking noise.. I havent got a clue, its not in the filter?
Maybe a rock in the impeller?

I have the SAME THING in my tank, and it drives me insane! I've never thought it might be the heater! It sounds just like glass cracking, but that sounds has been going on for over a year now, and no leaks anywhere.

My heater is still working fine - keeps the water at a steady 78.

The Heater In question is an "all glass aquarium"(aqueon)200 Watt Submersible Heater Shatter-Resistant Accurate +/- 1º.
But i havent heard the noise lately and my temp seems to be stable.
To recap though, My temp was dropping and my heater was thunking, I added a second heater that was smaller, and my temperature stabilized and the thunking stopped a few days later.

As long as it isn't an almost full-grown spixi stuck in the impellar of your HOB filter!

(to this day no idea how he got into the impellar area- he was too big to fit- was a major task getting it out!)
