Heat rise! Could this be causing my Betta to flash?

Would salt treat a possibility of gill ***es if this behaviour continues? Is there a particular "all round" med that you can recommend that would help? (I'm in the UK)

Salt from what I've read does little to combat flukes. It does kill ich which is more often the cause of flashing, and does nothing for ammonia burn, but does help with the usual (not always) nitrite spike that follows elevated ammonia levels. The one nice thing about Flukes is that they are seldom themselves fatal, and therefore you can take you time with diagnosis and planned treatment. Flukes when they are severe enough usually lead to other secondary infections that kill your fish. the flukes themselves are seldom more than a big irritation to adult fish.

I would agree with Puma wholeheartedly about doing water changes and observing your fish for a few days. Ammonia burns the gills and any gill irritation will produce flashing from your fish. If they are used to 0 detectable ammonia, and you had measurable levels with high temps, that could produce a lot of irritation.

I agree, it probably wasn't the heat causing him to flash. Last summer at times it would get so hot in here that the temperature in my bettas' tank would get to 90 or a little more, and he acted the same as he always does. Lowering the temperature is a good idea though, high temperatures can reduce lifespan.

Thanks very much guys!

Unfortunately I don't have A HOB :) I have a Fluval canister filter, but I've upped the output on the two airstones to see if that helps. Is there anything else I can do to up the oxygen levels? I have quite a few large plants but I've noticed the cories zipping to the surface a little more than usual. No signs of distress though.

Also having the fan across the surface, the tank open and cooler water changes helped to bring the temp back to its normal range.

Woke up this morning and I can't see any flashing going on at all from the Betta and much less from the three cories (the other two never started for some reason). Also this morning I've noticed that the Betta has begun to build another bubblenest (his 2nd) so I'm guessing that this shows that he is comfortable again?

I'm going to keep up with the water changes and keep my curtains closed so that the sun can't get in and heat up the room and keep you posted about the results.

 Thanks again guys! Where would I be without you? :)
