I don't actually have a heat in my tanks because my room is always usually pretty warm but I was careless and let ich slip into my tank. So I dug up a heater. What can I use to guard it so my fish don't fry themselves? And what temperature should I bump it up to? The ich seems to only be in its beginning stages and I want to get rid of it before it gets out of control. Thanks!

I never used it before so I don't know how hot it gets. 'Frying' was just an exaggeration. I was just unsure of whether or not fish might injure themselves from the heater. So under normal circumstances, heaters just go straight into the tank without any covering over it?
Heaters are safe for fish. But dont touch them when they are emmersed and on. If not in water, they burn!
Yeah, basically the heater shouldn't get hot enough to hurt anything. I've seen fish perch on the heater many many times without an issue. The heat should be radiating out into the water the whole time, keeping the heater warm but not hot. If a heater starts running hot enough to burn then it is probably on its way to cooking the tank.
Best not to have one plugged in and out of water at the same time.
As for ich temperatures...that'll probably depend on the fish you have. Figure out the max they can handle. High 70's to low 80's seems to get tossed around a lot but it'll often basically be the highest temperature your fish can safely handle.
