We saw these pygmy chameleons at thatpetplace(.com). They are like a Jackson's chameleon, only about 3 inches long, with a stubby tail. We have a 46G corner tank in mind, and we wondered about a heater. Is it needed? Would a light be sufficient? (Our house it cool at night) Where do you put it? (planning on stones/gravel under peat/sphagnum for substrate, with some tropical plants.)

A 60-100 watt incandescent lamp would work as a heater.

I havent ever heard of these chameleons, so i cant really say if it is necessary.

Between your UV lights and the incandescent basking light, I would say you would have adequate heat. An undertank heater would warm the substrate, but most chameleons don't venture onto the ground often.

Have you been able to find a good FAQ on chameleon care? If not, here is one that describes the heating and humidity needs...unfortunately, they discourage aquariums because of the poor ventilation.

What type of chamaleons are they the dwarf types or actual baby Jacksons. Some types prefer/need it cooler at night some dont . Some suffer if hot even during day though I think most Brookesia dont bask other chamaleons must have UV.
If you find out the exact type than you can look it up. I looked into the dwarf Jacksons but opted not to as seemed to delicate but many types arent if you keep them right and even breed.

yea a "heat lamp" should be good but some sunlight is good for them every so often i had a jacksons for 9 years. they make good pets. as stated they dont do so well in aquariums. a wire or screen cage would be best.

Did you keep your Jacksons outside ? I found a few breeders in CA they seemed to keep them outside . I looked into the dwarf version of the Jackson but heard could be delicate so opted not to.
I have seen wild Jackson (well saw only one) in Miami up in a tree . Very neat looking as it was 3 horned male .

Thanks. I forgot about the Hawaii ones recall few yrs back the local gvmt there was talking about killing them all as they werent natives glad they didnt
