I 'am going to be getting a new heater for the 29 gal, the one thats in there now is a Tetra and has about a 2.5 degree swing....

I have a 55g gallon too and dont really like my Marineland heaters. I know 200W is the desired range for a 55g, but would it hurt to have the 300w? Prices differences are negligible so, a 300w seems like an option?

nope not really just heats a bit faster...i always used to over shoot with my heaters. never had any problems.

You might look at Jäger heaters. They really are accurate ±0.5°F. I have my 200 watt set at 85°F right now to get all my sand to settle faster in my 58 gallon and I have a 100watt set at 80°F to speed die off on my live rock in a large trash can. I keep track of temperature with a Pinpoint wireless thermometer.

Some heaters will say "For Freshwater Tanks" in REALLY small print. Make sure you don't get one of those, I noticed it first on the Guardian brand but have seen others.
