Bellevue Oh
ok i live in north-west ohio and its is gettin down right cold at night down to like the low 50's or lower. while this is fine with me its hard to keep my fish tank temps stable. i got a 10gal the set-up you get from wal-mart w/everything included. my problem is if i un-plug the heater the tank gets down to like 68 or lower, and if i plug the heater in it sky rockets to almost 90. i have the heater set on the lowest setting and it still gets to hot, it won't keep a steady temp like i thought it would, so should i just go and buy a new heater or does anyone else have any suggestions? thanks all

p.s in the tank i have 1 male betta and 5 neons tetras.

Sounds like a faulty heater....Take it to Walmart and tell them it doesnt work and see if they will exchange it for you even though it came in a kit they might still swap it....they could open another kit and give you that one and then they could return the opened kit back as faulty...or they might work a deal with you on a heater that they sell

I agree on try to return the heater, and if not visit a petsmart or petco, and pick up a better brand of heater. Personally I prefer a submersible heater, so i can hide it behind plants or rock work.
