I looked this morning and my temperature was at 85. I have not changed my heater settings but the raise in temp could be due to the raise in outside air temp I guess. Anyway I looked at my heater in the water closely and the water around it was "distorted", if that makes any since. The water around the heater looked wavy and distorted. Pretty much like you are looking down a hot asphalt road in the summer time and you can see the heat making the air coming off the road distorted. THis is what my water looked like. My heater is a Penn-Plex 12" non-submersible heater.

if its too hot turn it off unless you want fish for dinner!

Have you tried turning it down to see if tank temp drops?

I turned it down as soon as I saw it..... It's dropping but I don't want it to drop too much of course so I am keeping a close eye on it today. I just didn't know if the room temp had that much effect of if anyone else had ever seem this water distortion before. Temp is about 83 right now....

Those Penn Plax heaters are pretty crummy. Hard to keep a constant temperature. You might consider getting a better submersable heater.
I like the visatherm stealth. They run around 18 bucks online depending on the wattage.

no, turning it off would then in turn cause the water to cool down TOO much.. which would create the need to turn it back on, and the fish aren't exactly engineered to put up with that kind of stress.

use the thermostat, and just turn it down a little and see where that gets you. :)

stealth heaters by marineland to me are the best heaters to use,bit pricey but worth every penny

Went out and dropped the $ for one of these. It was kinda expensive, around $35. But I tell ya you guys are right, this thing is great. My water temp is a constant 79. Thanks guys no more water temp problems!

I pricematched the online price in the store and got my 250w Stealth for $20.99
