Heater too powerful?

The heater in my tank seems to be either too powerful for my tank size or malfunctioning because I have it set on 78 degrees but the tank temperature is currently at 86+. I've added LR so I'm concerned about the integrity of the critters on the rock, what can I do to fix this? If this issue doesn't fix itself by tommorrow I'm just going to get a heater graded for 40 gallons.

My current heater is a 300W orca tech and I have a 37 gallon tank.
 
Ignore the temperature markings on the heater, they are rarely if ever accurate. So much depends on ambient room temp, lighting, and other factors. I know its a stretch, but if the tank is too warm....try turning the heater down.
 
I think my heater may be broken because it has a analog dial that shows temp and a rubber coated "switch" that should adjust temp but whenever I press this switch to either side nothing happens.
 
Well if you have to replace it print out the visitherm prices from drfostersmith.com and petsmart will price match it.

petco should, big chains usually do. Another thing is usually the prices are cheaper on petco and petsmarts webpages, so you could even print off there own prices, and they would def. match that.

I have done it with the drsfosterandsmith prices before too, but they tend to give you more of a hassle and they call there managers up and what not, but they always eventually give it to you....
