Heaters making a popping sound randomly

I'm just bothered by the sound at night when I'm in bed, also... the popping must be loud to the fish. Just like when someone hits or taps on the glass thats startles them, I'm worried that the popping will stress my fish in someway since it's something they are not use to.

Well holy crap! You guys just unveiled a mystery to me.

Every once and a while I would hear a slight pop when I was near one of my tanks which has 2 heaters in it. I was always wondering if it was the tank settling or shifting and I always got a little worried. I almost bought another tank last week because of it.

Glad to help :)

40years.. None of my heaters have ever made a noise..

I'd replace any heater that did. It means the contacts are insufficient and could weld up sometime... A bad thing.

Condensate inside??? The seal is failing. Replace it!

Pops constantly? Possibly steam generation due to condensate. Not good.

I went ahead and replaced mine last night...havent heard the noise in several weeks but this thread got me thinking about it so I decided to go ahead and get a new one.... Ended up getting a Visi-Therm Stealth 250w for my 55g... Did the online price matching at Petsmart ...got it for the $20.99 online price instead of the $34.99 instore price :headbang2:

I too was thinking along the same lines of the popping noise maybe being some sort of condensation inside the heater...and that wouldnt be good if it were enough to cause the glass to shatter when it popped or shorted the thing out.... although I never have noticed any in the heater I figure I had rather be safe than sorry

I wonder if there are warranties on these things. I have 2 300w Aqueon's, and I thought that Aqueon might not be half bad. I probably will end up trying to contact Aqueon and see if I can possible do an exchange or something.

They don't pop often, but what you guys said both makes sense. I'm not gonna push it much longer.
