I know that when I get my 80 Gallon I am going to need to get a heater. So I was wonder what types of heater you all have in your tanks that big and which one actually works to heat a 80 Gallon??
I guess this is sorta a questiong for 80gJoe... but everyone is welcome to answer
I recently picked up a Jali titanium 300 watt heater. I love this thing. The temp controller is rock steady and very accurate. I have this in a 90 gal tank with a 20 gallon sump and I had a 10 gal refugium. I'd say the total water volume I had was around 100 gallons of water. I leave my window open in my room all year, and when the temp hit 80.3 degrees it would heat up 81.5 in minutes. Very good heater, and I'm well below the 5 watt/gallon rule.
Well, having 2 heaters is more efficent for bigger tanks. It also depends on how warm your room with the tank is. If the room is around 77-80 degrees, the general rule is 2 watts per gallon. Tronic heaters are excellent, along with Ebo-Jager
Ebo Jager heaters are one of the best. I have a tank downstairs that is at 80 degrees constaintly, and it has a Ebo Jager 100 watt heater for a 30 gallon tank.

2 heaters are good for the 80 gallon, in case one "fails"... Ebo Jagers seem to have a proven 'track record'. I have not had a prob with mine. On the subject of heaters, remember, when doing water changes, UNPLUG the heater..
These heaters are designed for underwater use! Damage can/will happen if they are not In water....
Also, some heaters are fully submersible, others are not - and require staying above water to the designated "Line" shown on the heater.
Have had 4 heater fail on me this year not the 10yr old jagers just the new ones all diff brands two broke in the on posistion cooked 12 nice tetras in one tank baby arrowanas in the other
I'll 2nd that...just a few weeks ago while I was doing a water change, I forgot to unplug...next thing I know I'm trying to figure out what that burning smell is...Let's just say those little plastic clips are no match. I imagine this could be VERY dangerous if you took a phone call..or weren't there to realize what happened, it doesn't take long to get VERY hot.
And as far as the topic goes, I'll 4th or 5th, or whatever for Ebo-jagers...I used to think they were all the same until I finally bought some ebo's...they're much better. Accurate, easy to adjust...never had one die yet...
Well, I favor the titanium heaters that are out. I have one from Via Aqua. very nice
I like it because it has a separate temperature probe, control unit and heater. So I have the titanium heater in my sump, the temp probe hidden conspiculously in my tank, and the controller under my stand.
Plus with the titanium - no need to worry about breaking a glass tube
