Hey- This is my first time posting on here. I'm Zuchini, but you can call me Zee if you don't like vegitables.

I've got a 30 gallon tank, with 2 shubunkin goldfish, 1 small and one large calico faintails, 2 comets, a pleco, and a golden mysterey snail.

Now here's what I need help with. My snail needs a little boost with his shell growth, and I've heard Tums help. I know people who use them, and I need to know if they'll be safe with the rest of my fish. I've also heard that you can only give them grape and strawberry- and that the other flavors have things they can't have. Is this true?
:help:

I hadn't heard the flavor thing...I heard they were all okay. My favorite food for snail shell growth are Ken's Premium Vegetable Sticks With Calcium. You can buy them at Kensfish.com. They are dirt cheap, and super high quality. All his other foods are great too. Just freeze whatever you are not using. :)
Also, welcome to AC! You are in good company if you like inverts.

Yes, it's true that tums help snails with their growth or snail jello if you have any at your disposal. Welcome.

Thanks! Do you knwo if they're safe with the goldfish and pleco?
And yes- I love inverts. I wanted to breed snails but 'mother' forbid me. XD

It's very possibly you're not having good shell growth because of the temperature. Pomacea Bridgesii are more of a tropical invert. When they're in a cold water aquarium, they're metabolism slows down which in turn slow down their growth. Another reason could be that you have a very large bioload in that tank and the snail (as well as your fish) are becoming stunted.
www.applesnail.net is a great site with lots of snail info. Please read up on all the different types of snails.

I guess being a vegetable is better than being a fruit-cake. Never gave my fish Tums but I use them for my cat and for my shrimp. I use plain without vitamins or flavoring.

Instead of Tums, if you are looking for the calcium add eggshells or a cuttlebone.

tums wil not hurt your fish, but they do cloud your water a bit. Making snail jello out of jar baby veggies, plain gelatin, and crushed calcium pill will probably be better for you. Don't put you temp over 76 degrees or they will grow too fast and their shell will get thin. If they are having breakage or pitting, then you know they need more calcium. they like hard water with ph 7 or above.

Welcome to AC!
