Upstate NewYork
Im from upstate New York, in the Hudson Valley. I have had aquariums on and off over the decades starting when I was in my twenties. One of my desires in life was to have a humongous freshwater aquarium built right into one of the walls of my house. I built the house, got it all paid for and am just about ready to put a four season room on the west side. I figured it would be a good idea to get back into the aquarium hobby again, so here I am. I am amazed at how much things have changed since the last time I set some up. I dug out my 55 gallon and a 30 gallon low profile. I just purchased a Marineland bio-wheel and plan on putting in an under gravel filter as well.

I just finished putting the water in the 55 gallon tank tonight and got the bio-wheel going. I will have many questions as time goes on. My first question is:
My intention is to have tiger barbs as the main show fish and wanted to have a black gravel. Has anyone used larger black beauty? Or does anyone have any ideas for a black gravel substitute?
Thanks for now!

hey Elone, Welcome to AC.
I've never kept Barbs. I have standard black gravel in a ten gallon. (don't know about large black beauty). with my gravel it turned the tank black. rinse it extra well.
Good Luck!

Welcome to AC!
