:help: i made a mistake! i had a perfectly nice tank going. 26 gallon with some fake plants, a rock structure, driftwood for decoration and 1 pleco (4 inches now), 5 swordtails 1 m/ 4 f ( two of whom i added this week), 5 serpae tetras.
my ammonia was 0, nitrates 10-20 ppm, nitrites 0, chlorine 0, very hard water, ph 7.8, high alkalinity - according to the jungle 6 test dip stick I bought.
ok. so i am doing my weekly 25% water change and i find..to my amazement - 6 fry swimming in the top of the tank. i was so excited i went out and bought them a 10 gal. i put some of the rocks ( a smattering) and filled the tank 1/2 with the water from the big tank and 1/2 regular water. i put the jungle water conditioner tablet and one jungle ph tablet in the water. they also have some of the biofilter that was in the big tank in with their filter. they have the floating plants that they sell for fry...it was in my big tank waiting for them to come..so i moved it. the fry seem happy and are eating their fry food (hikari baby food). they are venturing out of their hideout and swimming about. incidentally, i did take the advice i found here and put a pantyhose over the filter so they wouldn't get sucked into it. Thanks!
my problem is the big tank! i think i changed too much water at the same time. they ended up with a much bigger water change than i had planned, what with adding their water to the fry tank after i had already done about a 25% water change! i put the usual jungle tablets into their water, and some salt ( 1/ rounded tbs to each 5 gallons is what the box says- and i did half of this since i didn't change all the water out). i also took out the male swordtail since he was actually causing damage to the two females of his choosing so that they could heal up in peace.
now the big fishies are all swimming at the top of the tank.
my water parameters are still as shown and i cant figure it out for the life of me. i even tried tempting them with bloodworms but they didn't want to come down to eat them..usually they eat them before they hit the ground!
any help would be appreciated!!!

:welcome: and sorry to hear of your troubles, but you will get more answers as Mgamer said if you post in the freshwater forum. I used to add aquarium salt, too but stopped as I've read on this site that it's not necessary. And my fish haven't suffered since I've stopped and my plants are actually doing better. It may also be that you need more circulation in your tank. Are the fish gasping for air at the surface?

Hello............:welcome:

Welcome to the AC.......

enjoy your stay!

swordtails will appreciate it if you dont add salt to their water. the pH tablet could be causing the problems here. the pH of the new water, and the water in the tank is most likley fluctuating all around, which stresses the fish. stop adding the pH regulators, the arent necessary and as you can see they stress the fish.
