hello everyone! :help:

i had a question, i've been keeping freshwater tanks for a few years now, and I currently have a 20 gal with a few platys and bala sharks. I'm thinking of down-grading my tank to maybe just a fishbowl (i can't go without no fish at all!) and I wanted to just get maybe a goldfish or two, as I've never really had good luck with Bettas.

I want to just get a few gal tank and keep a fish or two, no filtration or added mechanics, just to simplify the whole thing.

any suggestions would be great!

The only fish I'd find even remotely suitable for a bowl rather than a tank is a betta. A 20 gal would be suitable only for the platies out of your current stock; the goldfish and bala sharks both get too large for such small accommodations without added mechanics. Anything else without at least a 5 gal bowl without added filtration will probably not live a full and healthy life.
Small tanks are generally harder to keep stable via water chemistry than larger ones; fluctuations take place much more rapidly in a smaller volume aquarium. You of course will still have to perform regular water changes on a betta bowl, but it will be the lowest maintenance for the cost that I'm aware of. Regardless, goldfish are too dirty and get too large for the size of tank you're considering. If you're having trouble with keeping betta's, I'd suggest asking a bit more on their care and doing a bit of reading; they're one of the easiest species to keep IME and a good place to start in the hobby.

Glad to have you here!

Aki..I would copy your post and start a thread in the FW forums asking for suggestions. You will get many replies there.

welcome :)

Welcome to AC,i would still use a small filter its much easier than frequent water changes and less stress on the fish.

thanks everyone! and thanks for all the responses and welcomes!
