Tell us a little more about your tank that contains the smelly brown algae. My first inclination is that the tank is being overfed and has either low-med light or some diffused sunlight.
What's the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH at? What's your maintenance schedule like? Do you do weekly water changes? What kind of filters do you have? What size is the tank? What's in it?

And yes when asking question about stuff like that it is best to post the full parameters of your tank plus type of water, planted or not, etc.
