I'm Ashes. I am just forraying back into fish again. I have some slight experience, with koi, and aquatic frogs. A ton of experience with reptiles (have a peruvian boa constrictor, a blue tongue skink and a rescued balled python, currently)

I recently rescued a betta from wally world... Is it just here, or do all wally worlds treat their fish crappy?

Also got an unknown fish dumped in my lap. He's a tiny little guy, bout 3 inches long (maybe), very slender, bright silver, with a black stripe running his length. He is in a ten gallon tank--- Apparently, from what my ex-aunt-in-law says, he was in the tank with about 8 other dead fish when she found him. The tank was in the apartment of someone she had to evict, they had unplugged the filter and left everyone to die:swear:. She cleaned his water up, and brought him to me. Soooo, I will try to get my hands on a camera soon. Maybe you guys can help me identify him? :help:

Hi Cheshire
Im new too. It sounds like a feeder minnow to me<but without pic. could be anything.
Anyways welcome to the addiction.

Ya welcome to AC alot of very helpfull ppl here gonna need a pic of the fish though to find out for sure

Turns out the little guy is a scissor tail! I was able to take some very blurry shots on my cell phone and a friend at work was able to tell me what he was. I'm doing a bit of digging around to see what I can find information wise, now that I know what he is.

I promise you all some pictures when I can get my hands on a digital camera. :)

Thank you!

Glad to have you here!

There are many places that treat fish like yesterday's garbage because there are no laws that protect them like other animals are protected. The standard attitude that prevails is "So what? They're only fish!" The second leading cause of lax care is that they don't generate the profit factor many stores want. They are only there to generate the sales of higher profit items. This is true not only of box stores but also many LFS. Fish are simply not a profit. It is very difficult to get laws changed based on altruistic ideals. Many states, et al, actually have a clause that exempts fish from the same care level as a cat or dog might be held to. Regulators are likely to step in ONLY IF it creates a public health or safety hazard. Sad isn't it?

It only takes one person to get the ball rolling to get laws changed in an area.

I would say that it is likely that 7 out of 10 box stores do not give fish proper care, regardless of the name.
