Heya,
Those african cichlids can be downright nasty.. It was probably brewing for a while and I wouldnt be surprised if the fish were trying to breed, which brings out added aggression.. I would either stick with one species of the zebra or go for a mbuna tank with a million hiding places or move on to an american cichlid tank. Its not the best to mix the different cichlids.

suprisingly i had the same group of 9 zebras in a 3ft tank (40 gallon) they bred in there and i had 2 lots of fry.
pretty much no agression except the odd chase.
this one is weird???
btw the whole tank has like >30 kg of rocks with heaps of places to hide
i put my favourite big red zebra (double size of them) in with the remaining 4 to sort them out and the obi female and him were dead the next morning!!!
this is annoying
i am going to get another tank maybe this afternoon (im in aussie) a 4 footer for two of my red top zebras and my big electric blue male.
the lists in my signiture is after i move them around.
i think ive gone off zebras because of this incident

I would suggest only barbs and other peaceful fish as your possible tankmates for the 125g.

hmm.... im lookin at a south american/ central american setup for the 125g with maybe earth eaters/oscar/acaras/jackdempseys/salvinis??
