Okay, I just did a 50% water change this evening, and removed a big resin "log" from the tank. It has been about an hour since, and I suddenly saw one angelfish totally freak out, start swimming in circles, and upside down. Less than 4-5 minutes later and it is dead. DEAD! At that moment, angel number 2 suddenly does the same thing. My balas and danios are fine, as is the third and final angel.

Temp has not changed.
Water parameters are fine.
Used water conditioner when doing change (just bought last week, so it's not old.).

Any ideas what the hell is going on?
Thanks in advance.

Wow.
The only thing I could think of was that the log might have had some gasses caught underneath it or something.
Did you notice any foul smells as you were taking out the log, or during any part of the change?
Wait... Re-read your post and it said they died an hour later...
I'm stumped.

Sorry for your loss

How did you carry the water to the tank? did you use a bucket?
Is there any possibility there was soap residue in the bucket?

Usually if something dies rapdily like that there is a toxin introduced into the tank.

Wow, sorry about your tragedy -- wish I had a clue for you. The others are still fine?

Well, it's official. A new record. Three angelfish. 10 Minutes. All Dead. Cue the Funeral March, it's a sad night in tankdome.

What would cause such sudden death? All fish were healthy, and now all are just dead. No warning.

My first thought is that it might be some bacteria that was hiding in the fake resin "log" that I released? Hence the large water change, but I guess it didn't matter.

sounds like a contaminant on your hands or on the equipment you used for water changes. all i can recommend is scrubbing your hands and more water changes with different equipment

I use a hose attached right to the faucet. The bucket is only to "mix" the water conditioner so it is more diluted when I add it to the tank. Until tonight, I have never had a problem. It must be some sort of buildup in the log. My danios and balas are still fine. So weird.

I don't know what it is but I would transfer them to another tank with new water temporarily. I know the sudden change in parameters is not very good but if there is anything poisonous in your tank, you can't leave the others in. It must take a lot to kill an 2 angels so quickly like that. Its not chlorine as they would have died within 15 minutes of the water change. I'm thinking poisonous gas in the water as a possibility.
Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for the quick responses though!

Sorry for your loss. Are the others still doing fine in the tank? Did more water changes help? If the poison is diluted then the less likely you will have more problems. The more diluted with more water changes the better.
