I have been checking out these forums for a while but this is my first post. I recently got back into fish, I have a 25G with underground and power filtration. When i started the tank i used cycle and aquaplus and i have real plants inthe tank which seem to be doing well. I threw 3 large giant danios in my tank just to get things started. about 2 days ago.. the fins of one of the Danios starting showing discoloration.. went from clear to sorta of a rust colour. Soon after that he was swimming upside down and so i got rid of him. The other 2 were fine until today, they seem to have developed some of the same colour... anyone have any idea what this could be. Thanks for any anwsers you can give. These forums rock!

probably a secondary infection caused by the unfinished bacterial cycle.

there are a lot of posts about the cycle product - one of them is my own

do a search and read up on it . . . if it works you still have your nitrite eating bacteria to establish

Hi FiveIron,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Use the search link at the top of the page and read everything you can about cycling.
Your fish are probably in trouble because of excess ammonia and / or nitrite, a common problem in new set-ups that haven't been cycled.

Get ammonia and nitrite test kits at your LFS and test daily.

Do partial water changes daily to get the ammonia and nitrite down to 0. (Test the water you're adding to the tank: AquaPlus does not remove ammonia and nitrite, if you have ammonia and/or nitrite in your tapwater, like I do, you might want to switch to Amquel & Novaqua (I use both) or Prime.

Good luck, I hope your danios are feeling better soon.

cycle doesn't contain the right bacteria to cycle your tank, it sits on the shelf of stores, no refrigeration, it does contain bacteria, just not the ones that develope for the nitrite cycle, only bio-spira contains the right bacteria, try to get some gravel or a filter media from another "established" tank and it will contain the right bacteria, as for now, water changes water changes water changes and test kits. good luck

I have test strips and they show everythingin normal range.. actually nitrites and nitrates are at practically 0 . I will check out this bio-spira stuff. Not sure they have it at my local petstore.. anyone on edmonton alberta know where i can get some? The live plants seem to be doing really well.. and they filter out ammonia right? could there be something else wrong? thanks for teh help, i have been reading my face off about cycling.
