Please someone help me!!! I have a problem in my tank that I have never had before! my tank is full of algae but it is not attached to anything it is all in the water! i cleaned my tank including partial water change and within three days the water was so green I couldnt even see my fish! I have two blue gouramis that love to have babies but they cant do that lately cause they cant seem to find each other in that algae infested water! I have tried "Algae Destroyer" it made the algae a lighter shade of green but it is still really bad! What should I do?

You have a nutrient imbalance in your tank that can be a result of too much waste or too much light. What does your fish load look like and how much are you feeding your fish? How long do you leave the light on? Do you have a planted tank and are you adding fertilizer and trace elements?

A temporary fix would be to use a diatom filter or UV sterilizer. They will fix the problem until you do a water change, so you will need to fix the imbalance unless you plan to use them after every water change.

I have heard that doing a "black-out" will solve your algae problem. A black-out is when you wrap the tank in a black sheet and leave the light off on the tank for a few days. I guess this seems to get rid of the problem fast but I have yet had to try to do this.

I have two blue gouramis, a small catfish and a pleco, which the pleco will be relocated to a bigger tank very very soon. How much of the water should I change? Where can I get a diatom filter?

A water change won't help. In fact, it may re-introduce the algae spores back into the tank after you've removed them with a diatom filter or UV sterilizer. That's why you should figure out what's causing the algae problem in the first place.

1. How big is your tank?
2. How long do you leave the light on?
3. How much and how often do you feed your fish?
4. Do you have a planted tank and are you adding additional chemicals?

Diatom filters and UV sterilizer are best purchased online. I have a hard time finding diatom filters in stores and UV sterilizers are much cheaper online.

A good diatom filter is the HOT Magnum with the micron filter. Much easier to use then the old diatom filter and almost as good.

But a balck-out will work. Cover tank completely for 3-4 days, NO LIGHT!!. Fish will be OK (I have done it).

Also why are you getting algae?? if you do not have plants, then only turn on lights to see/feed fish.
