Help Brand new!!

The system you have is very nice and will work just fine. The tank is very unique and if your better half likes it you better stick with it :). So lets get some water, rock and sand in that tank already!!!

All lights say they are for covered tanks. I have never done a rimless tank before. Does the light just rest on the glass itself? Just make sure it's secure as you don't want it going into the tank. Maybe you could get some of those little rubber bumpers for the feet to cushion it? You could also hang the light above the tank.

So what's the plan for rock? Are you planning on using RO water? Do you have salt, test kits, hydometer, etc.? I'm sitting here tapping my fingers...:)

Edit: Is this tank glass or acrylic?

I have distilled water waiting in jugs just waiting hehe!! Im not 100% sure whether its glass or acrylic to be honest. Seems like glass but not sure. Do you think it will break because there is no rim?

You think my cleaningcrew will get out of my tank? The guy at the store said starfish wont climb out of the water because there smart enough to know.

I have the hydrometer/salt

Test kits i was gonna grab with the live rock.

Figured Id run it a few weeks with rock then go over to the cleaning crew, then onto fishies in another couple weeks.

should I go with cultured live rock or jakarta? I seen some neat ones online but clagary sucks for saltwater suppliers :(

well idk about starfish, but i know that turbo snails, and other small snails will leave tank (somehow got out of mine). Good luck, sounds great so far.

I feel like all I'm doing is telling you not to do something but I just want you to get off to a good start. That said, I really recommend using Reverse Osmosis or even better RO/Deionized water. You can often find RO at the grocery store dispensers and RO/DI at your LFS. You can also buy a RO/DI filter for about $150 which will save you time and $ down the road. Not saying you can't use distilled, just that RO is a better way to go.

That's why I asked. I did some searching yesterday and the only rimless tanks I saw with a light sitting on top were acrylic. All the glass ones I saw had the light suspended over the tank.

Snails are going to go wherever they want regardless of whether the tank has a rim or not. I would just recommend how to support your light.

I have the hydrometer/salt -

Good. Hydrometers can be off a little sometimes so it's a good idea to take a few measurements of the same water to make sure its reading consistently. If you know someone (maybe you LFS) that has a refractometer you can take them a water sample to compare what your hydrometer is reading. I fully trust my hydrometer but will likely get a refractometer down the road.

Good. Avoid the test strips. Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, pH for sure. Calcium and Alkalinity once you want to start adding corals.

Figured Id run it a few weeks with rock then go over to the cleaning crew, then onto fishies in another couple weeks.

Use your test kits to determine when its safe to add you CUC and fish. Go slow with the stocking and let you tanks bacteria population catch up between additions.

I have no idea what jakarta is. You want the best rock you can find/afford. Your want it to be highly pourous to provide as much surface area as possible for the bacteria to cover. All of your rock doesn't have to be live but it will cycle quicker if you do. You can buy dry rock like this:

You want about 50% of your rock to be live though. Well cured (established bacteria) LR is the best way to go. This would be the equivalent of getting rock out of someones tank that has been running for a good period of time. If you were to get that quality of rock you probably won't even see a cycle. Coraline is a good sign too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks greech you been a huge help cant tell you how much I appreciate it, Im so grateful to have posted here!

Glad to help. The things that I have mentioned are based on what I have learned and my own experiences. Please don't take what I say to be the only way. Everyone in this hobby seems to have a different experience with their tanks which is why I have found it to very beneficial to get information from multiple sources. From there you can make your own decisions on how to setup and maintain your tank. Look forward to seeing your progress!
