help, comet sea starfish is lloing ruff.

i wouldnt spend money on upgrading what you have now, instead save the money until you have the better skimmer

But if it is going to be a good while before the new skimmer can be bought I think it would work better, a good skimmer is going to cost around $200, I think I have seen the upgrade kits for around $30 so if $30 can improve what is there and make a better situation for the livestock why not??? If it will only be a month or two then I would not buy it.

for that size tank you wont need to spend that much unless your heavily stocked, you can find decent skimmers at around 100-175 dollars

Clare I agree with Niko about the Salifert ones (I've recently changed to them myself). The main tests you need to worry about for now is

PH
NitrAtes
NitrItes
Ammonia

Those 4 test kits would cost you £26 at the website I gave you last night plus p&p

Hope this helps

hi,

sorry im replying so late. :)

i just phoned that place you gave me a link for, and they had abput 8 difrent tests, of salifert. i asked which ones do i most need, and they said all of them.

Here are some water parameters you should strive for...

* SALINITY:1.024-1.026s.g. Tested with hydrometer
Salinity can be as low as 1.021s.g. for fish only tanks

* PH 8.2-8.4 tested with high range test kit

* TEMPERATURE 76F-83F The key here is to stabilize the temp at a constant number like 79F.

* AMMONIA 0ppm Tested with a saltwater hobbyist test kit

* NITRITE 0ppm Tested with a saltwater hobbyist test kit

* NITRATE 0-10ppm Tested with a saltwater hobbyist test kit

* PHOSPHATES> 0-.03ppm Tested with a saltwater hobbyist test kit. WARNING! ALGAE BLOOMS CAN OCCUR IF PHOSPHATE LEVELS EXCEED 0.02PPM This can be controlled by using a phosphate resin.

* CALCIUM 380PPM-450PPM Tested with a saltwater hobbyist test kit
WARNING: LOW CALCIUM LEVELS WILL LEAD TO STUNTED GROWTH AND SEVERE HEALTH PROBLEMS IN CORALS AND CLAMS

* ALKALINITY 2.5-4.5meg/l Tested with a saltwater hobbyist test kit. ALKALINITY is a measurement of the systems ability to buffer itself. PH, ALK, CALCIUM are all linked and balanced together. You should strive to keep all levels stable and in balance.

* MAGNESIUM 1250-1350ppm Magnesium should be tested at least once a week and adjusted properly

* STRONTIUM, IODIDE, AND IRON should be dosed weekly per manufacturers directions OVERDOSING IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE!!! DO NOT OVERDOSE!!!

This is a lot of test. Your LFS should be able to test these for you. SUPPORT YOUR LFS!!!

thanks for help

Get some Kent Garlic Extreme and thaw the fish then put a drop or two on the fish, allow it to soak in and feed. It is extract from the same garlic you and I eat.
