So I noticed yesterday that one of my zebra danios has full-blown dropsy. But he's still swimming actively and searching for food. I moved him to a QT tank with a warmer temp and higher salt. What else can I do for him? How long should I wait before euthanizing? How do I do that?

Meanwhile, my main tank parameters were all excellent across the board. I went ahead and did a thorough tank cleaning, even cleaned the plants, and changed the filter media. The other fish look happy and healthy. Should I do anything with the main tank?

Thanks for your advice!

Yup, his scales are sticking straight out like a pinecone. It's a classic case of dropsy. How should I euthanize? I've never had to put a fish down before, and it just kills me to do it. Suggestions? TIA!

before you euthanize check to see if the fish has a curved spine. I recently had to put down an old apisto that showed symptoms of dropsy but also had a curve of his spine. I can't find any info on curved spines except TB and I won't believe that if I don't have to.

So here's the update: after about 48 hours of quarantine, my danio only seemed to get worse. I bought some clove oil (eugenol) and soon he was at peace. I was a little sad, being the first time that I've had to euthanize one of my fish. Oh, and his spine looked straight to me.....

Thanks for all your advice!

Sorry about your fish, but I think you made the right decision.

Flicka, I am so sorry for your loss. I am brand new to the hobby, and absolutely dread the day that I am in your position. May your "baby" find eternal peace and happiness (& lots of tasty treats), up in that big tank in the sky....
